In Africa the silent time bomb, AIDS, is ticking on continously. More and more People die from the virus, long before their lives have realy started. Namibia is one of the five countries in the world WHO have the highest rate of AIDS cases. According to official statistics, every fifth inhabitant between the age of 15 and 49 is infected by HIV/AIDS. In some regions, every third pregnant women is HIV positiv. According to the international organisation UNICEF, about 230.000 Namibians are already infected making AIDS the most common cause of death in the country.

But AIDS is a tabu, so people don´t want to get involved or talk about it. At risk are mostly girls and young women because they have not been brought up to talk freely about sex or to decide about sexual matters themselves. The dominant african male society mostly does not allow sex education of women and girls and so most of them are not aware of the dangers of HIV/AIDS and how to protect themselves.

Mothers with the HIV virus are lining up in front of hospitals and help projects to get milk for their babies free of charge, but their is not enought money to help all of them. These mothers can’t breast-feed their children: throught mother’s milk their babies would get infected with the HIV virus. If they don’t breast-feed, the babies die of starvation. A terrible situation!

The Emergency Aid Namibia helps mothers with AIDS and their children in distress. Konny von Schmettau organises baby food and blankets, food for the mothers, baby bottles and many more things needed. She is regulary in the slums and also assists help projects who care for mothers and babies in distress.
